Charter Bus Packing Guide

Storage Space on our Different Bus Models in San Angelo

When you call us to book a bus, you can request a bus with undercarriage storage, parcel racks above the seats, or both. Our full-size charter buses have the most storage space, with large compartments under the bus that are perfect for suitcases, boxes, or sports equipment. You can also add parcel racks to hold small bags, jackets, or snacks during the ride.

If you choose a minibus for short trips around town, you probably won’t have undercarriage storage, but many minibuses do come with parcel racks. Minibuses also have overhead bins that can hold backpacks or briefcases.

Not sure what type of storage you need? Just let our team know what types of items you’ll be bringing, and we’ll find a bus with the right amount of room for your group. We can even help you with specialty storage options if you’re transporting musical instruments or medical supplies.

How Much Space is Available in the Under-floor Bays?

Full-size charter buses often have three or four bays beneath the bus. Each bay is usually about 8 feet wide, 3.5 feet tall, and 3 feet deep. That gives you enough space to fit one large suitcase per passenger, so everyone in your group can bring everything they need. If you’re heading to a sporting event at Foster Communications Coliseum or a band competition in Austin, you can even fit larger items like coolers, tents, or tubas.

One important thing to keep in mind: you won’t be able to access the undercarriage storage while the bus is moving. If you think you might need something during the drive, like a snack or a phone charger, make sure to keep it with you or put it in an overhead bin.

How Much Space is Available in the Overhead/Parcel Racks?

Overhead bins on charter buses are similar to those on airplanes, though they’re often open rather than closed. They typically measure about 10 inches high and 17 inches deep. That makes them great for holding briefcases, purses, laptop bags, or small backpacks.

Most buses allocate one section of the parcel rack per row of seats. So if you’re taking a 56-passenger bus, you’ll have about 14 sections, each shared by four people. If everyone brings a small bag, you should have no trouble fitting them all overhead.

Minibuses sometimes have smaller overhead bins, or none at all. If you think your group will need extra space, just let us know when you call. We can find a minibus with parcel racks or recommend another solution.

So, How Many Bags Can Each Person Bring?

On a standard 56-passenger charter bus, each person can usually bring one large suitcase for the undercarriage and one small bag for the overhead bin. If your group isn’t filling all the seats, you may be able to bring more—just ask our reservation team, and we’ll do the math for you.

Minibuses have less space, so it’s best to limit each person to one small bag. If you need to bring a lot of equipment, like golf clubs or camera gear, we recommend booking a larger bus or renting a trailer to tow behind your minibus. We want to make sure everyone has a comfortable ride without bags crowding the aisles or seats.

Packing & planning tips for group leaders

Before you start packing, check with your group to see if anyone has special luggage needs. For example, someone in a wheelchair may have a foldable chair that needs to be stored, or a musician may have an instrument that can’t go in the undercarriage. The more information you give us, the better we can help you plan.

It’s also a good idea to label all luggage with names and contact information. That way, when you arrive at your destination, it’s easy for everyone to find their bags. If you’re traveling with kids or students, you may want to assign chaperones to supervise loading and unloading.

Finally, remind your group to keep valuables like wallets, phones, and medicine with them during the ride. Even though our buses are secure, it’s always safer to have important items close at hand.
